Details of a family Trip

Trip description

Our family service trips provide a way for the whole family to serve together and are suited for volunteers 8 years and older. These trips will bring your family closer together by working side-by-side with the families in Tijuana being served. Building Hearts creates an experience where everyone participates and is needed.

5 day Trip Schedule

  • Day 1 (Sunday):  Cross border, attend church, unpack at dormitory, walk through neighborhood, and visit project site and family being served.
  • Days 2-4  (Monday - Wednesday):  Wake, gather, and eat breakfast.  Work on service project.  Evening activities.
  • Day 5 (Thursday):  Wake, gather, and eat breakfast. Pack up and leave for border.

accomodations

  • The building we stay in is clean and safe.  It has bunk beds with mattresses, toilets, showers, a kitchen, electricity and secure parking. Depending on family sizes and the number of families that come, each family will get a private room to use. We eat most of our meals in this building.

Meals

  • Breakfast: Beans, eggs, tortillas, quesadillas, and chilaquiles.
  • Lunch: Burritos, Tacos, and Tortas
  • Dinner: Enchiladas, Tacos, Tostadas, Chicken with beans and rice, Mole,
  • Other: Snacks, water, gatorade are provided throughout the day and evening.

Project work

  • Framing, painting, sheetrock, insulation, roofing, plumbing, electrical, digging and minor landscaping.  No experience is required... you will get on the job training.

Evening activities

  • Visit to orphanage
  • Dinner at our favorite taco stand
  • Cultural performances from locals
  • Games and other fun

travel

  • You will be required to get yourself to San Diego at a meeting point close to the border.  Special insurance for your vehicle is required in Mexico and costs roughly $35 / day.

Border crossing

  • Crossing the border is a fun experience that we will do together.  It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours.  People over 18 years old need a passport.  Those 18 and under need proof of citizenship (drivers license or a copy of a birth certificate).

Donation use

  • Your donation is 100% tax deductible as we are a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  Donation funds are used mostly for building materials and also covers food, entertainment and support or local orphanages and others in need.  No one with Building Hearts Foundation is paid or otherwise compensated.
